County rivalry: Talented Tigers get victory on Bobcats’ home field
Bragging rights in Carroll County’s boys soccer rivalry belong to the Green Forest Tigers.
The Tigers beat Berryville 5-2 on Monday, March 15, at Bobcat Stadium.
Green Forest’s offense was led by senior captain Emerson Ortiz, who put the Tigers ahead to stay with the first goal of the game less than three minutes into the first half. Ortiz later scored a second goal, while Blue Doh Soh, Blut Htoo and Lah Kpro added one goal apiece for the unbeaten Tigers.
With 30 players on their roster, including 12 seniors. Several of those seniors, including Ortiz, have big-game experience from Green Forest’s 2019 Class 3A state runner-up team.
“We have quality and quantity. I have 30 kids and they all want to play, so it’s kind of tough to get them all playing time,” Green Forest coach Eric Perez said. “We only have 24 jerseys so most of the time, not every kid even travels.”
“Green Forest definitely showed how good they were,” Berryville coach Bryce Moorman said. “They’re physical they’re just really good at handling the ball. And they’ve got some shooters for sure. It was tough for us to keep up with them at times, it seemed like. They definitely are a great team. I expect them to be making a state run this year.”
Sophomores accounted for both Berryville goals as Juan Perez scored from outside the box and David Tapia converted a penalty kick.
The day after the win over Berryville, Green Forest opened conference play with a 9-1 victory over Lincoln. Ortiz and Soh scored three goals apiece while Htoo, Andy Lopez and Tony Gonzalez each added a single goal.
The Tigers kept right on rolling on Thursday, winning 6-0 at Lead Hill. Ortiz and sophomore Elvin Montoya scored two goals each, while goalkeeper Jesse Romero held Lead Hill scoreless.
On Tuesday, March 16, Berryville lost 3-1 at Farmington. Junior Freddy Roque scored the Bobcats’ goal off an assist from Juan Perez.
Berryville’s scheduled game against Huntsville on Thursday was postponed because of weather.
Both Green Forest and Berryville are off this week for spring break and will return to action on Tuesday, March 30. Green Forest will play at Bergman, while Berryville will travel to Clarksville.
