2nd-half goals lift Lady Tigers over Berryville
The Green Forest Lady Tigers dominated the second half on the way to a 3-1 victory over Berryville on Monday, March 15.
After the two teams were tied 1-1 at halftime, Green Forest got two second-half goals while holding the Lady Bobcats scoreless over the final 45 minutes.
“It really is like a battle playing them,” Green Forest coach Ashley Wilson said after her team beat Berryville for the second consecutive year. “They played real well, but we just came through.”
Samantha Delavin, Myndy Zamora and Hanya Fuentes all scored for Green Forest. Mia Thurman accounted for Berryville’s first-half goal.
“I just thought our defense as a group played real poorly,” Berryville coach Aaron Hall said. “That’s not to take anything away from Green Forest. They ‘re a pretty good club. I think they have a chance to go pretty far in that 3A level.”
Berryville was playing its first game with a full squad, including several players from the Lady Bobcats’ basketball team.
“We’re still trying to figure out who we are,” Hall said. “We’ve still got a ways to go but I think we’ve got the kids to have a really nice season.”
On Tuesday, March 16, Green Forest defeated Lincoln 9-0 as sophomore Emily Lozano scored four goals. Blanca Galindo, Marianna Beltran, Bianca Rosales and Rachel Hernandez each added goals for the Lady Tigers.
Berryville got back to winning form quickly, traveling to Farmington on Tuesday for a 3-0 victory. The Lady Bobcats led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by senior Lauren Compton, then added a quick goal by Sarah Pruente to start the second half after what Hall described as a “beautiful” sequence of passes. Senior Lilli Compton scored the final goal of the game.
Green Forest will host Shiloh Christian on Tuesday, March 30. Berryville will also be back in action that day, playing at Clarksville.
