Tigers put up a fight against Bergman
The Green Forest Tigers ran into a buzzsaw in their only game last week but still managed to be competitive with one of the state’s top Class 3A teams.
Bergman defeated Green Forest 69-56 at Grim Gym on Tuesday, Feb. 2, behind nine three-pointers and 28 points from Walker Patton.
Green Forest coach Shane Compton pointed out that the Tigers trailed by just six points at halftime — 38-32 — before Bergman went on a 22-8 run in the third quarter.
“We fought back and had it back down to within 10 in the fourth quarter and just couldn’t get over the hump,” Compton said. “Every time that we felt like we were coming back, (Patton) would come down and make a three. And it wasn’t that they were uncontested. The young man could just shoot. He just had one of those games where he couldn’t miss.”
Senior Daniel McDonald scored 20 points to lead Green Forest, while junior Jordan McLoud added 11.
The Tigers will host Valley Springs on Tuesday and finish the regular season Friday at Elkins.
“I believe those are two winnable games but we’ve got to show up and compete,” Compton said.
Green Forest has been hit hard by COVID-19 protocols causing players to miss games this season, but Compton said he hopes to have a full roster for Tuesday night’s game and moving forward.
“We’re not at school today,” he said Monday afternoon. “Every day I go back, I just kind of cross my fingers that everybody’s there. But as far as I know everybody should be there tomorrow and hopefully through the remainder of the season.”
