Highlanders split two games

The Eureka Springs Highlanders officially started their 2020-21 basketball season with a victory over St. Paul on Thursday before losing to Lead Hill 55-48 on Friday at Highlander Arena.

Eureka Springs led by seven at halftime against Lead Hill but was outscored 30-16 in the second half.

“They can really shoot the basketball,” Eureka Springs coach Brian Rambo said. “They took two shots from the logo on our floor and made them.”

Junior guard Matthew Lester led Eureka Springs with 32 points and tied a school record with seven three-pointers in the first half.

Eureka Springs will host Jasper on Tuesday and Haas Hall of Rogers on Friday.

The Lady Highlanders lost to St. Paul and Lead Hill as Rambo coached the team in place of head coach Ryan Sanchez, who is on COVID-19 quarantine.

McKenzie Loudermilk scored 16 points and Olivia Cross added 14 for the Eureka Springs, who will not play again while Sanchez is quarantined.
