Lopez leads Bobcats at state CC meet
Berryville senior Jacob Lopez took seventh place among Class 4A boys at the Arkansas state cross country championships last week at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, leading the Bobcats to a seventh-place finish in the 4A team standings.
Lopez covered the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 43.69 seconds. Other Berryville runners were senior Caden Nickell (34th place, 19:09.20), sophomore Trenton Hughes (47th, 19:39.98), sophomore Cole Price (63rd, 20:11.68), senior Reese Johnson (74th, 20:26.71), sophomore Dawson Williams (116th, 21:30.13), sophomore Robby Bartos (118th, 21:38.29) and senior Josh Wilson (168th, 24:04.54).
Freshman Carly Smith finished 22nd in the girls 4A race, recording a time of 22:31.88 as Berryville finished 13th in the team standings. She was joined by sophomore Gisselle Estrada (47th, 23:49.03), freshman Zariel Long (99th, 26:21.04), senior Mariana Hernandez (135th, 30:59.47) and sophomore Shayleigh Broeker (138th, 31:47.42).
Green Forest finished eighth among Class 3A boys teams, led by junior Paco Rangel and sophomore Alonzo Rangel, who finished 25th and 26th respectively with times of 19:23.73 and 19:29.59. Other Green Forest runners were sophomore Matthew Vasquez (46th, 20:49.57), freshman Chris Alvarado (55th, 21:05.20), junior Kevin Cifuentes (58th, 21:11.48), junior Andy Lopez (73rd, 21:55.22), freshman Alex Alvarez (77th, 22:12.28), senior Jonathan Farias (90th, 22:34.35) and sophomore Elvin Montoya (96th, 22:53.91).
Green Forestís girls took 10th place in Class 3A. Freshman Sophia Rojop was the first Lady Tiger to finish, taking 49th place in 23:59.63. She was followed by junior Samantha Delavin (57th, 26:09.47), junior Marianna Beltran (68th, 26:57.11), freshman Kimberly Cid (73rd, 27:26.48), freshman Natalie Calderon (86th, 29:26.66) and senior Alejandra Lopez (93rd, 30:43.98).
Eureka Springs juniors Jakoby Wright and Eason Nystrom competed in the Class 2A boys race. Wright finished 62nd in 23:20.22, while Nystrom was 88th in 26:26.14.
