Every morning on the way to work, I listen to the radio for the news and weather reports. This morningís broadcast was particularly interesting to me. According to our regional radio stations, the CDC has announced that wearing a face mask doesnít just protect everyone around you from contracting COVID-19 ó it protects you, too!
That was a joy to hear. Gideon and I have been wearing face masks since March, long before Gov . Asa Hutchinson issued a statewide mask mandate. We initially wore the mask because we were told that it prevents us from spreading the disease to others, and we care about the people around us.
A few months ago, I wrote a column encouraging everyone to wear masks. I was pretty blunt about it. I wrote that if you donít wear a mask, you are selfish. I was frustrated when I wrote that and it still grinds my gears a little bit, to be honest. I have given so many people the evil eye when running errands over the past few months.
Thatís why I was so excited to hear the new CDC guidance. It gave me hope that those of you who refuse to wear the mask because you believe it doesnít protect you might begin to reconsider your stance. We shouldnít ever need selfish reasons to protect others, but Iíll take what I can get at this point.
After all, our COVID-19 numbers are steadily increasing in Arkansas and throughout Carroll County. Weíve lost 21 Carroll County residents. If you ask me, thatís 21 too many. I donít want to lose any more of my neighbors, and I know Iím not the only one who feels that way.
So when you go to Walmart this weekend, mask up. When you fill up your gas tank, mask up. When you are anywhere in public, mask up. Frequently wash your hands and keep the distance from anybody that isnít in your household. That kind of behavior wonít just protect everyone around you.
It will protect you, too.
