Letter to the editor: Support the library
Welcome, October! Not only are we celebrating cooler temperatures, but we are also celebrating the fact October is “Friend Your Library” month! In past years, as you would arrive at the courthouse to pay your taxes, you would more than likely find the Friends of the Library sitting at a table in the foyer asking you to join the Friends of the Library. The pandemic has canceled most all of our fundraising events, such as our famous holiday bake sales and annual Chicken Hop fundraiser; however, the needs of the library continue now more than ever! The library’s role is not just about books on a shelf, but also how they can offer assistance for people trying to navigate through our world of advanced technology.
The Friends of the Library are still here and need your support to renew your membership or to consider joining for the first time! Mayor Tim McKinney recently signed a proclamation proclaiming the week of October 18-24, 2020 as National Friends of Libraries week. What a perfect time to join the effort in support of the Berryville Library. Memberships begin at only $10/year. Not only would we love you to join the Friends of the Library, but we would also encourage you to donate the gift of time by helping with special projects. And of course, we would also love your tax deductible donations to help us reach our goal of building a new library.
Friends of the Berryville Library was reestablished in 2017 and has grown now to over 150 members. Since that time the Friends continue looking for unique ways of helping raise needed funds.
“The library is an integral part of any community and Berryville is so fortunate to have such a wonderful library resource right in our backyard” said Mary Knight, Friends of the Library president. “2020 may have been a rough year for many, but its effects has only enhanced the importance the library is playing in helping patrons find jobs or attend meetings and seminars electronically, just to name a few of the resources the library offers all free of charge. ” Knight added.
Support your community by supporting your public library, which exists to serve all people regardless of race, social class, or economic status. The library needs to grow to continue meeting the needs of our growing community.
In closing, if you can donate money, time, or fundraising ideas or if you have an interest in serving as an officer or committee member, please call us at 870-423-2323. Your interest would be greatly appreciated and welcomed.
So, please consider taking this special month and joining or renewing your membership to the Friends of the Berryville Library TODAY!
Happy Friend Your Library month! Curl up with a good book to help us celebrate!
