Eureka Springs school board receiving bids for renovations

The Eureka Springs School Board agreed to start receiving bids on phase two of the elementary building remodel and renovations to the soccer and track complex at its meeting Monday, May 11.

Phase two of the elementary renovation includes a new ceiling, flooring, indoor and outdoor paint and restroom renovations. The soccer and track field changes include leveling off the infield of the track and building a parking lot at the south end of the track.

The school board also approved a salary schedule for food service workers and bus drivers this summer.

Food service workers will receive $20 an hour and bus drivers will get $50 per day, for the last week of May and through June.

The board also approved two of three recommendations from the personnel policy committee on an increased stipend.

The two it approved were to add $100 to the stipend for each high school and middle school quiz bowl coach. The stipend was $300, so it will now be $400 for both coaches.

The other recommendation was to raise the EAST coordinator’s stipend from $600 to $1,100, and the board did not approve it.

“I’d like to revisit that item for next year. We can look at that to see if there’s that kind of need,” superintendent Bryan Pruitt said.

In other business, the school board approved a special education assurance agreement, which it has to do every year, and agreed to extend the contract with PCMI services for getting substitutes.

Also at the meeting, the board approved the memorandum of understanding that the Connect 4 board just approved with North Arkansas College.

“We will receive funds from the Office of Skill Development for our program that we can use for consumable supplies, salaries and benefits,” Pruitt said. “It has to be given through a college; it can’t just be given to C-4. So that’s one of the reasons we looked for the partnership.”

Pruitt said the partnership also gives the students the opportunity to get concurrent credit.

The board then voted to accept the resignations of paraprofessional Glenda Allison, paraprofessional Tina Elliot and third grade teacher Leva Murphy, and to hire Kim Phillips as elementary administrative assistant.

The board agreed to extend the contract of the new food service director, Debbie Arnold, by five days to train her.

“Some of that training is for them to learn about procurement procedures and the food service budget,” Pruitt said. “Our budget in our food service is $500,000, so it’s a big deal.”

The school board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 8.
