The Green Forest softball team opened its 2020 season with a 9-7 loss on Monday at Marshall.

“We started off kind of rough,” Lady Tigers coach Daniel Fitts said. “We made a few errors that cost us.”

The scored was tied 5-5 in the sixth before Marshall pushed across four runs to earn the victory.

Fitts said seniors Alissa Smith and Kiara Taylor both drove in multiple runs for Green Forest. The Lady Tigers’ offense was hindered by 17 strikeouts, however.

“I’m pretty happy with the seven runs,” Fitts said. “If we can make contact and make the other team have to make some plays, I think we can score more. We’ve been working on our hitting a lot.”

Junior pitcher Gracie Youngblood struck out four Marshall batters and walked one. Fitts said Taylor also will start some games on the mound for Green Forest.

The Lady Tigers hosted Greenland in a doubleheader Thursday. They’ll be at home again Monday against Yellville-Summit.
