Conference Champs: Wilson’s buzzer-beater gives BV title
By Scott Loftis
The Berryville Junior Bobcats are conference champions, in the most dramatic of ways.
Jake Wilson’s basket at the buzzer Monday night gave Berryville a 33-31 victory over previously unbeaten Farmington to clinch the title for the Bobcats.
With the game tied at 31 and 2.3 seconds on the clock, Berryville coach Cody Curtis called timeout and drew up what turned out to be the game-winning play.
“I drew up it in the huddle for Jake to come off a double screen being the first option and then Nate Allen was going to be the second option coming off a screen on the back side,” Curtis said. “They both were actually open but they hit Jake with it and he turned around, took one dribble, put it up and got a pretty good look at it and he knocked it down.”
Berryville finished the regular season 16-4 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
“My starters are good kids, real basketball-minded kids, fundamental, and it shows with the year we’ve had,” Curtis said. “We’ve had a really good year. It’s been a lot of fun the last couple of years with these kids.”
And it’s not over yet. The Bobcats are the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament that began Thursday night at Bobcat Arena. Berryville will play at 11:15 a.m. Saturday against the winner of Thursday night’s game between Shiloh Christian and Gravette. The tournament championship game is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13.
