Grind of 3 quick games catches up with Bobcats

Playing three conference games in four days is a difficult assignment for any basketball team, especially when one of those games is a down-to-the-wire nail-biter at home and the other two are on the road.

That’s the combination of circumstances that the Berryville Bobcats faced last week, and it finally caught up with them on Friday as Shiloh Christian beat Berryville 49-43 on the Saints’ home floor in Springdale.

“I really felt like they got us at the perfect time,” Berryville coach Brent Compton said Monday.

The loss capped a busy week that saw Berryville beat Harrison by three points at home on Tuesday, then wen at Gentry on Wednesday in a game that was rescheduled from Friday, Jan. 10, because of inclement weather.

“I could tell we were just completely worn out,” Compton said. “We played our guts out on Tuesday, then had to turn around and go on the road Wednesday. We came out for practice Thursday and our legs were just dead. We ended up just having an hour shoot-around so we could get our legs back. … We showed up over there Friday night and it looked like we hadn’t practiced in a few days.”

Berryville (14-5, 2-2 4A-1) led 20-19 at halftime, but Shiloh (9-8, 2-2) took a one-point lead at the end of the third quarter and held on for the victory.

Landon Chester scored 17 points for Berryville.

“Our kids obviously were very disappointed,” Compton said. “But it’s not the end of the world. We have a few games left and we’re still right in the thick of the conference. We don’t want to allow that loss to turn into two losses.”

It doesn’t get much easier for the Bobcats this week. Berryville has just two games scheduled this week, but both are against tough opponents, at Farmington on Tuesday and at home against Pea Ridge on Friday.

“Those are two good teams,” Compton said. “They’re big and they’re physical. We’ll have to play hard and play well.”
