The Berryville city council approved the appointment of Joann Harris on Tuesday to fill the council seat formerly held by the late Cindy George.

George, who had served on the city council since 2005, died in early December.

“Joann is a former county assessor,” Berryville Mayor Tim McKinney said in recommending Harris’ appointment. “She’s very interested in what’s going on in Berryville, and said she would be willing to serve and finish out this term and then see how she does. I think politically she’s going to be a lot like Cindy.”

Also at the meeting, the council adopted the city’s 2020 operating budget and approved a rate increase for solid waste disposal services from Carroll County Solid Waste Authority of 3.25 percent.

“On a residential bill, it would be 34 cents,” McKinney said. “If anyone wants to look at other towns’ rates, we’re still way below the average for our area.”

The city council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21.
