It took the Berryville Bobcats one quarter to really start rolling in Friday night’s game at the Grim Gym in Green Forest.

But once the Bobcats’ shots started to drop, they just couldn’t stop.

Berryville outscored Green Forest 23-3 in the second quarter and went on to a 59-24 victory in a game between county rivals.

“We started a little bit slow in the first quarter,” said Berryville coach Brent Compton, whose team improved to 11-3 with the victory. “Once we made some shots, we got going.”

Junior guard Landon Chester made three of Berryville’s 10 three-point baskets and scored 13 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Bobcats. Sophomore Kade Davidson also had three three-pointers and scored 11 points, all in the first half.

All told, 11 players scored at least two points for Berryville.

“It was nice to be able to play some different kids,” Compton said.

Berryville was coming off a hard-fought loss to unbeaten Dumas six nights earlier in the championship game of the Bobcats’ annual Holiday Hoops tournament. Compton was thrilled with his team’s gritty effort in that game, and he said he was hoping to see some carryover against Green Forest.

“My main focus was, how hard can we play, and how well can we execute,” he said.

Berryville scored the final two points of the first quarter and the first 11 of the second quarter, including back-to-back-to back three-pointers from Davidson, junior forward J.D. Smith and Chester to open the second quarter. Senior guard Chris Lehr added a layup after a Chester steal to cap the 13-0 run and give the Bobcats a 23-6 advantage.

After Green Forest sophomore Jordan McLoud scored off a pass from junior Adrian Serna, Berryville reeled off 12 more points. Senior Austin Franklin scored a pair of fast-break layups during the run, which also included a three-pointer by Davidson and a pair of driving layups by Chester. That made it 35-8 and Berryville led 35-9 at halftime after Serna made the second of two free-throws to complete the first-half scoring.

Berryville led 48-17 after three quarters. The Bobcats’ final six points of the night came on three-pointers from sophomores Kennon Helmlinger and William Dean.

Senior Coby Rincon led Green Forest (3-13) with eight points while McLoud added seven. The Tigers will play at Clinton on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Berryville played at Hollister, Mo., on Tuesday night.
