Lady Bobcats overpower Lady Highlanders
By Scott Loftis
The Berryville Lady Bobcats made a quick recovery from their first loss of the season.
Berryville beat Eureka Springs 54-22 on Nov. 22 at Highlander Area, shaking off a 64-60 road loss the previous night to Rogers Heritage.
“I was really proud of the girls,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said. “As much energy as they expended the night before, they showed a lot of character to come right back out and win the next night.”
Junior point guard Lilli Compton scored 17 points to lead the Lady Bobcats — including four three-pointers in the first half as Berryville raced to a 30-12 halftime advantage.
The Lady Bobcats were able to control Eureka Springs’ dangerous front line by applying pressure on the Lady Highlanders’ guards.
“They just locked ’em down and really made it hard for their guards to get the ball inside,” Cornelison said.
Senior Shelby Little led Eureka Springs (4-8) with 10 points.
Senior Jordan Estepp and junior Abby Thurman had eight points apiece for the Lady Bobcats.
Berryville improved its record to 5-1 and Cornelison acknowledged that he would have gladly accepted that before the season started as the Lady Bobcats had to replace four senior starters from last year’s team.
“It was a lot of unknowns with these girls,” he said. “They’ve really stepped up and responded to the challenge.”
