Cause for celebration: Lady Highlanders upset Class 4A Huntsville
By Scott Loftis
Coming off a conference championship and their best season in several years, the Eureka Springs Lady Highlanders stumbled a bit early this season.
But the Lady Highlanders righted themselves a bit with a big victory on Nov. 19, defeating Huntsville 36-33 at Highlander Arena.
“It was a big win,” Eureka Springs coach Ryan Sanchez said.
The Class 2A Lady Highlanders held a 10-point lead early, then rallied after Class 4A Huntsville went ahead.
Senior Megan Holloway put Eureka Springs ahead to stay when she scored off an offensive rebound with 30 seconds left.
Holloway and senior Gracie Lester finished with eight points apiece for Eureka Springs, while senior Shelby Little led the Lady Highlanders with nine points. Another senior, Katelyn Ross, added six.
“We were pretty balanced,” Sanchez said.
The Lady Highlanders outrebounded Huntsville 29-20 and shot 41 percent from the floor, but committed 28 turnovers.
“If we cut that down to 10, we win by 20 points,” Sanchez said.
Eureka Springs is 4-6 after a 1-4 start. Sanchez said he believes the Lady Highlanders are starting to head in the right direction.
“Hopefully, we can get this rolling,” he said. “We’ve talked about ‘let’s control our attitude and let’s control our effort.’ ”
Eureka Springs traveled to Pea Ridge on Thursday. The Lady Highlanders will host Berryville on Friday.
