Lady Saints hold off Berryville
By Scott Loftis
The Berryville Lady Bobcats lost to Shiloh Christian on Oct. 10 at Bobcat Gym, but not without one heck of a fight.
Berryville rallied from a 2-1 deficit to force a fifth set, then overcame a 13-8 deficit to extend that set before Shiloh Christian emerged with the victory by scores of 27-25, 18-25, 25-19, 22-25, 17-15.
“It was definitely hard-fought,” Berryville coach Kristin Whetham said. “We just couldn’t pull it out.”
The Lady Bobcats have already clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming district tournament and an automatic bid to the Class 4A state tournament. Although Whetham said her team can learn from the loss, the most important thing to do is keep moving forward.
One area where she’d like to see improvement, Whetham said, is in the Lady Bobcats’ defense.
“I don’t think we played solid the entire game defensively,” she said. “Offensively, we played well but we didn’t stop them when we needed to.”
Senior Taylor Swofford had a team-high 22 kills and also had two blocks and two aces for the Lady Bobcats. Senior Lexy Anderson added 16 kills, while senior Jordan Estepp had 10 kills and six blocks. Junior Lauren Compton had six kills, four digs and three aces. Senior Kelsey Smith had eight digs, with senior Kate Powell and junior Lilli Compton adding four each.
Berryville (13-3, 8-2 4A Northwest) hosted Huntsville for Senior Night on Thursday.
