Overcoming adversity has been a point of emphasis for the Berryville volleyball team this season, beginning in preseason practice.

On Tuesday, Sept. 10, the Lady Bobcats proved they are capable of working through some difficult situations.

With two starters benched for disciplinary reasons, Berryville won a hard-fought match in four sets against Blue Eye, Mo. Berryville won 27-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-23.

“It was a good match,” Berryville coach Kristin Whetham said. “I thought Blue Eye was going to be a little down. They lost five of their top players from last year. But they were pretty solid.”

So were the Lady Bobcats, who rallied from an 8-1 deficit in the third set to take control of the match.

“That’s been a real focus for us,” Whetham said. “Being able to learn and overcome obstacles is one of our main goals this year. We didn’t quit.”

Senior Taylor Swofford led the Lady Bobcats with 21 kills and four aces to go with a pair of blocks. Senior Lexy Anderson added 11 kills. Senior Kelsey Smith had two aces and 35 digs. Senior Jordan Estepp finished with seven kills and four blocks. Junior Ella McMellon had two blocks. Senior Kate Powell had a team-high 19 assists while junior Abby Thurman added 13 assists.

The Lady Bobcats hosted Gentry on Thursday afternoon.
