Good Shepherd to hold rabies clinic Sept. 21

Good Shepherd Humane Society is continuing its partnership with the Eureka Springs Community Center.
At the board’s regular meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 28, assistant shelter manager Kathy Cobb announced that the shelter will be offering a rabies clinic at the community center on Saturday, Sept. 21. Board president Jay Fusaro said the community center is the perfect place to have the clinic, where dogs and cats receive low-cost vaccinations.
“We need a place that has an open area to administer the shots,” Fusaro said. “We need to let cats out of a cage, but they need to be contained in an area we have room for. There’s also a lot of parking there.”
Shelter manager Sandra Mittler delivered the shelter report for July, saying the shelter adopted out three dogs, four cats, seven kittens and one puppy. The shelter took in four puppies and accepted the return of four dogs. Mittler said three of the dogs were adopted out more than a year ago, reminding the board that the shelter takes animals back at any time.
“There were no return to owners. No lost animals were reunited,” Mittler said, “but that’s a good thing. Maybe none of them were lost.”
Mittler said the five new kennels have arrived, saying they will be placed at the showcase section of the shelter. The shelter will soon install the kennels, Mittler said, and recently installed new brightly painted kennel dividers.
“That was a long time coming,” Mittler said, “but we did get that installed. We want to thank everyone for helping us get those up.”
Mittler said the shelter has started to install its new picture boards, which feature animals looking for a home.
“We are still pushing forward and hope to get the rest of them up shortly,” Mittler said.
For the first time in a long time, Mittler said, Good Shepherd will have a picture board at Walmart. Mittler thanked board member Cody Qualls for negotiating to get the picture board in place at Walmart.
“They’re going to put it right up on the main front wall by the cashiers,” Qualls said, “so it’s not going to be in the back somewhere. It’s going to be in the most visible spot in Walmart, right up front.”
The board heard from thrift store manager Janet Chupp, who said the thrift stores have been benefiting from the new security camera system. On one particular morning, Chupp said, two women were caught on camera stealing from the Eureka Springs store.
“We have a really good idea of who they are,” Chupp said. “It’s really not difficult with those cameras.”
The Berryville store has two new volunteers, Chupp said, and is always looking for more.
The board then heard from fundraising chairwoman Fiona Richards. Richards said the Cause4Paws event was a huge success even though it was pouring rain on the day of the event. Richards said the event brought in $1,352 altogether, with $880 in entry fees, $327 in raffle tickets, $50 in canned goods and a $120 donation from HotBoxx WoodFire Pizza & Side Bar.
“With flash floods and 100 percent chance of rain, the band played on,” Richards said.
Good Shepherd spent $59 on wristbands for the event, Richards said, and there are plenty left over for future events. Considering its success, Richards said, Cause4Paws could happen twice a year.
“It turned out to be a cool little event,” Richards said. “We’re looking at making it every six months or an annual event. We’re open to whatever happens.”
Treasurer Mark Minton presented the financial report, saying Good Shepherd is reflecting a loss of $5,272 for the month of July compared to a budgeted loss of $2,014. Total income was less than budget by $124, Minton said, and the total expenses were $3,134 higher than the budget. Part of the reason for the loss, Minton said, is timing with the fundraising revenue. Once Bonejour Gala happens later this year, Minton said, the board will have a better idea of what the finances look like.
The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the meet and greet room at the shelter.
