Land raffle to benefit Eureka Springs Farmers Market

For more than 15 years the Eureka Springs Farmers’ Market has provided a place for Eurekans to gather, purchase locally grown produce, and build the local economy while supporting sustainable food sources.

In 2017 the Farmers’ Market Board of Directors moved the 20-member market from Pine Mountain Village to the Eureka Springs Community Center.

“The community center offered us a permanent home,” said Jon Toombs, president of the farmers’ market board. “Their mission, ‘To provide a place for the community to Gather and Grow,’ aligns perfectly with the Farmers’ Market.”

The move to the Community Center also provided the farmers’ market with a distinct opportunity: the possibility of a pavilion at the market site.

“A pavilion at the farmers’ market would allow for a great shopping experience in all kinds of weather,” said Bill Featherstone, a member of both the farmer’s market and community center board of directors. “It would be an asset for the whole community, and would also be used for events such as Yards and Yards of Yard Sales, and motorcycle rallies that are already hosted on site.”

This season, the Farmers’ Market will begin its fundraising effort and grant search to help complete the ambitious project. Toward that end, Jim Fain, a longtime supporter and patron of the farmers’ market, has donated a plot of land in Holiday Island that will be raffled off at the farmers’ market.

“I’ve owned the lot, just shy of an acre, since the early 1990s,” Fain said. “I thought I’d build a home on the improved, secluded lot, but that didn’t work out for me. I’ve always been a big supporter of the farmers’ market, so it made sense to donate the lot to help raise funds for a great group of people who grow clean, fresh, local foods. This matches my view on life and on health. The raffle winner can build a little cabin with beautiful gardens and a fireplace. A dream for the cost of a raffle ticket!” 

The “official” raffle kick-off will be held on July 4 at the Farmers’ Market Independence Day Celebration, and tickets will be available throughout the season until the Raffle Drawing on Nov. 11.  The Farmers’ Market Thursday July 4 Celebration features music by the Time Burners, face painting, bike decorating and parade, carving demos, and a story time and craft with Ms. April from the Carnegie Public Library.  Hot dogs for the complimentary cook-out have been provided by Smithfield Foods, Artisan hot dog buns by Sylvan Bread, and veggie dogs donated by farmers’ market members.
