The state finance department has released State Sen. Bob Ballinger of Berryville and his wife, Jessica, from a lien that had been filed over unpaid taxes.

Bryan West, a collection manager for the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration, writes in a May 14 letter to Carroll County Circuit Clerk Ramona Wilson that a Certificate of Indebtedness filed against the Ballingers on Nov. 13, 2018, for the principal sum of $1,732.09, “has now been satisfied.”

DFA spokesman Scott Hardin confirmed that the lien has been released.

“We cannot comment or provide any details as to why a lien has been released due to the confidentiality requirements (of state law),” Hardin says in an email responding to a request for information.

Ballinger did not return a call seeking comment Monday.

In December 2018, Ballinger said he was not aware that a lien had been filed. He said at the time that he and his wife had been making payments on their tax debt and “there wasn’t supposed to be a lien at all.”
