Tovar, Bobcats surprise Sand Lizards
By Scott Loftis
The Berryville Bobcats had a game plan going into Friday’s game against visiting Dardanelle on Senior Night.
“We tried a new formation,” Berryville coach Jesse Frost said. “We brought everybody back and tried to rely on our defense. We wanted to play good defense and try to get it to penalty kicks.”
As it turned out, the Bobcats played stellar defense but there was no need for penalty kicks. Senior Brian Tovar scored two first-half goals and the Bobcats held on to win 2-1, handing the Sand Lizards their first conference loss of the season.
“Tovar came out ready to play,” Frost said.
The victory should give the Bobcats (8-8-3, 4-4 4A-West) some momentum heading into the 4A-West District Tournament. Berryville, seeded sixth in the nine-team tournament, will travel to Clarksville on Tuesday. A win would assure the Bobcats a return to the Class 4A State Tournament, where they finished second last year. The final two rounds of the district tournament will be played at Berryville.
“It should be huge,” Frost said of the Bobcats’ confidence boost after beating Dardanalle. “They kow if we can beat Dardanelle, we can beat any team in the conference.”
Frost said he isn’t concerned about going on the road, even though the Bobcats lost 4-1 at Clarksville on April 18.
“We’ve been on two-hour road trips,” he said. “I think we learned from our first game there and I think we’ll come out ready to play.”
