Early deficit too much for Berryville girls
By Scott Loftis
The Berryville Lady Bobcats fell behind early and couldn’t catch up in a 4-3 loss at Clarksville last Thursday.
As a result, they may be headed back to Johnson County for the first round of the district tournament.
Clarksville jumped out to a 3-1 lead by halftime.
“We didn’t do a very good job early,” Berryville coach Aaron Hall said. “Our kids fought hard. We got down early.”
Berryville cut the lead to 3-2 in the second half before another Clarksville goal extended the lead to 4-2.
Berryville (8-9, 2-4 4A West) got within 4-3 around the 11-minute mark, but Clarksville (11-5, 5-2) deployed extra defenders and was able to run out the clock.
“It was just one of those real frustrating games,” Hall said.
Junior Natalia Hernandez scored two goals and senior Maryn Jones added one for Berryville.
Berryville will travel to Gentry on Tuesday before closing out the regular season Friday at Dardanelle. The Lady Bobcats will be either a No. 5 or No. 6 seed in next week’s district tournament and will open the tournament on the road — perhaps at Clarksville.
“We may be right back down there next week,” Hall said.
