Berryville girls dominate Morrilton
By Scott Loftis
Berryville coach Aaron Hall wasn’t feeling especially confident at halftime of the Lady Bobcats’ game against Morrilton last Thursday.
Berryville led 1-0 but Hall remembered a conversation with a fellow 4A-West coach whose team had lost to Morrilton earlier in the season.
“He said ‘We had about a hundred shots on goal and they had two. We made one, and they made one, and then they beat us on penalty kicks,’ ” Hall said. “So, the first half we had about 50 shots on goal and we’re up 1-0 and I thought ‘here we go.’ ”
As it turned out, there was no need for Hall to stress as Berryville added three goals in the second half for a 4-0 victory.
Karleigh Giles, Maryn Jones, Vickie Villatoro and Natalia Hernandez had one goal apiece in a balanced effort for the Lady Bobcats (7-8, 1-3 4A-West).
“The second half, I thought we controlled things even more than we did in the first half,” Hall said. “We were really balanced. Anytime you have goals from four girls, that’s pretty good.”
The victory was Berryville’s first since March 25, but with four games remaining on the regular-season schedule, Hall said the Lady Bobcats can still earn a good seed and perhaps a home game in the first round of the district tournament.
Berryville will host Huntsville on Tuesday before traveling to Clarksville on Thursday for a game that could have important implications for the postseason.
“That will possibly determine who gets to play at home in the first round of the district tournament,” Hall said. “There’s some other things that could happen, but the loser of that game probably has to travel.”
In boys action, Morrilton scored two goals in the second half and defeated Berryville 4-3.
