Berryville bounces back after conference road loss
By Scott Loftis
The Berryville Lady Bobcats showed some resilience on the softball field this week, bouncing back from a 5-2 conference loss at Gravette on Monday to overcome an early deficit and beat Providence Academy 8-5 on Tuesday at the Berryville Sports Complex.
Berryville coach Josh Hatfield said the Lady Bobcats knew the Gravette game would be challenging. The Lady Lions were a Class 4A state semifinalist last season after beating Berryville twice by a combined 23-1.
Monday’s game was much more competitive. Gravette outhit Berryville just 9-8 but scored two runs in the first and three in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead before the Lady Bobcats got single runs in the sixth and seventh.
Maleah Bryant and Kate Powell each had two hits for Berryville. Bryant and Hayley Rivett drove in the Lady Bobcats’ runs.
Berryville was not charged with an error.
“I thought we played really well at Gravette,” Hatfield said. “We just had one bad inning.”
Against Providence Academy, Berryville fell behind 4-0 in the top of the second but scored two runs in the bottom of the inning and three more in the third for a 5-5 tie. The Lady Bobcats took the lead with a single run in the fourth and then added two more in the fifth.
Junior Eve Linz was credited with a three-run inside-the-park home run on a line drive to center field in the bottom of the third to tie the game. Berryville took the lead on an RBI groundout by Bryant in the fourth and senior Taylor Kelley hit a two-run single in the fifth for the gam’s final runs.
“It was good that the girls were able to come back and they never lost their focus,” Hatfield said.
Berryville will host Mountain Home and Springdale Har-Ber on Saturday, weather permitting.
