Conference win, Rivett's HRs highlight busy stretch for Lady Bobcats
By Scott Loftis
The Berryville Lady Bobcats are enjoying spring break this week, but first they crammed a lot of softball into just a few days.
Starting with a 14-4 home victory over Prairie Grove in the conference opener on Thursday, March 14, the Lady Bobcats played five games in three days.
After beating Prairie Grove, Berryville played in the Bearcat Blast tournament in Brookland, where the Lady Bobcats won one of four games.
Against Prairie Grove, Berryville scored 13 runs over the final three innings to erase a 4-1 deficit. Lora Grace Hill hit a pair of doubles and drove in four runs for the Lady Bobcats, while Lexi Woods and Faith Kelley each had three RBI. Kelley pitched a six-inning complete game for the victory.
In the Brookland tournament, Berryville lost to McCrory 7-5 on Friday night. On Saturday, the Lady Bobcats started the day with an 11-4 victory over DeWitt before falling 4-2 to East Poinsett County and 9-4 to Hoxie.
“We faced some pretty good teams and some good pitching,” Berryville coach Josh Hatfield said. “We were playing well in a couple of those games but then we ran into the time limit. That’s just how it is in a tournament like that. But it was definitely good for the girls to see some different teams and maybe a different style.”
Senior Hayley Rivett had a huge game in the victory over DeWitt, hitting three home runs and driving in five runs.
“It was the first time I’ve ever had a girl hit three home runs, probably the first time for Berryville,” Hatfield said. “It was definitely something to see.”
Another highlight for Berryville came in Friday’s loss to McCrory, when sophomore Georgia Belle Patterson hit a solo home run to help ignite a late rally by the Lady Bobcats.
“It came at a big moment,” Hatfield said. “It was a big boost.”
Berryville will be back in action on Monday, March 25, when the Lady Bobcats host Omaha.
