Lady Bobcats step outside to shoot down Gravette
By Scott Loftis
The Gravette Lady Lions were determined not to let Berryville’s powerful frontcourt decide Friday’s game. So the Lady Bobcats let their backcourt do it.
Led by sophomore guard Lilli Compton, Berryville poured in nine three-pointers to beat host Gravette 58-29.
Compton made four three-pointers and junior guard Lexy Anderson added three. Each finished with 14 points to lead the Lady Bobcats (22-1, 7-1 4A-1).
Compton’s three-pointer at the halftime buzzer put Berryville ahead 28-13.
“She can play. There’s no doubt about it,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said of Compton. “She’s done a really good job for us, and she came up big for us Friday.”
Senior guard Baylea Smith scored 13 points for Berryville, which took advantage of open shots from the perimeter as Gravette crowded the inside in an effort to slow down senior forwards Kelcee Hopper and Hannah Morrell.
“They really packed it in, and our guards hit shots,” Cornelison. “Pick your poison, I guess.”
With the 4A-1 split into East and West divisions, Berryville is tied in the loss column with Harrison (17-4, 6-1), which visits Bobcat Arena on Tuesday night. The Lady Bobcats erased a double-digit halftime deficit to beat the Lady Goblins 47-41 on Jan. 8, so a victory on Tuesday would put Berryville in solid position to win the East division.
“It’s a situation where we could still finish first on our side,” Cornelison said. “If we don’t beat Harrison, then we’ll need some help.”
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
