Bobcats miss shot to win at final buzzer
The Berryville Bobcats were on the road Friday night, playing a quality opponent in a hostile environment. And they had a chance to win.
The Bobcats’ final shot didn’t fall in a 49-48 loss at Pea Ridge, but coach Brent Compton said there were a lot of positives for his team.
“Our younger guys really played well,” he said. “Our kids played extremely hard. We just made a few mistakes here and there and they took advantage of them.”
Berryville (9-12, 2-4 4A-1) led by 11 points in the third quarter and still had a three-point lead at the end of the quarter, but couldn’t hold off a talented Pea Ridge squad.
After the Blackhawks took a 47-46 lead, Berryville senior point guard Zakk Webb scored inside the final minute to put Berryville ahead 48-47. Pea Ridge answered with a layup from junior forward Nick Whatley for a 49-48 advantage with 36 seconds left.
Berryville’s final shot came on an inbounds play just before the buzzer. The 15-foot jumper was off the mark as Pea Ridge hung on to win.
“We got a good look,” Compton said.
Sophomore guard Landon Chester and junior forward Kelton Davidson scored 13 points apiece for Berryville.
The Bobcats will host Prairie Grove on Tuesday. The girls’ game will tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys following immediately afterward.
