Back from break, Highlanders beat Dragons
By Scott Loftis
Eureka Springs coach Brian Rambo chose not to work the Highlanders too hard in practice during the Christmas break, preferring to let his players rest and recuperate after playing 23 games before the break.
So it wasn’t surprising that Rambo said the Highlanders looked a little rusty when they returned to action last Friday at Mountainburg.
Still, Eureka Springs was sharp enough to beat Mountainburg 54-42 on the Highlanders’ home court.
“I thought for the most part we played really well,” Rambo said. “Our effort was good and our legs seemed to be good.”
Eureka Springs (19-5) led 31-25 at halftime and 43-36 at the end of three quarters.
All-state senior guard Garrett Cross led Eureka Springs with 22 points. Senior forward Carter Drennon added 15 and freshman guard Matthew Lester scored eight for the Highlanders.
Eureka Springs will play a pair of 2A-1 conference road games this week, traveling to Haas Hall Academy of Fayetteville on Tuesday and Cotter on Friday.
Eureka Springs 49, Mountainburg 34

Junior forward Shelby Little scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and junior forward Megan Holloway added 15 points and seven rebounds as Eureka Springs beat visiting Mountainburg on Friday.
Junior Grayson Ertel chipped in seven points and five rebounds for the Lady Highlanders.
