Getting closer: Bobcats stand toe-to-toe with conference heavyweight Prairie Grove
By Scott Loftis
The Berryville Bobcats might not be ready to go on the road and beat one of the top teams in the 4A-1 just yet, but they seem to be getting closer.
The Bobcats gave the Prairie Grove Tigers a scare last Friday before the Tigers rallied for a 22-0 victory.
Berryville (3-6, 1-5 4A-1) took a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback J.D. Smith.
Prairie Grove (5-4, 4-2) answered with a 1-yard TD run by fullback Garrett Heltemes to tie the score, then took the lead when running back Cade Grant broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run on a fourth-down play just before halftime.
The score remained 13-7 for most of the second half before Prairie Grove scored on a safety and a 1-yard touchdown run by Ethan Gunther in the final two minutes.
For a Berryville program that hasn’t won a conference road game in five years, the performance at Prairie Grove could be a sign of progress.
“We were so proud of our kids for fighting and competing,” Berryville coach Doug Shott said.
The Bobcats finished with 93 yards of total offense. Smith completed 6 of 10 passes for 42 yards and senior running back Logan Kooper ran for 27 yards on six carries. Senior Ethan Gregory caught three passes for 34 yards.
Seniors Christian Lemus and Keeton Disheroon had six tackles apiece to lead the Berryville defense.
On Friday, the Bobcats host Green Forest in the Carroll County Super Bowl. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
