Junior Bobcats win at Huntsville

On Thursday, the Berryville junior high football team got a 28-7 road victory at Huntsville. The Bobcats are now 2-0 on the season.

“It’s a great start to the year,” Berryville coach Derrek Aynes said. “They are really coming together. We played great on defense and pretty good on offense. It was just a really good all-around performance against our rival.”

The Bobcats scored their first touchdown on a 15-yard run by Brett Mingo. After Berryville made a stop on defense, quarterback Isaac Weston scored on a 40 yard quarterback draw. The Bobcat defense held Huntsville on defense again and Berryville went on a nine-play drive, which was capped off with a 7-yard touchdown run by Jaeden Tanksley in the second quarter.

“We are doing a good job of finishing the run, finishing the play and finishing our block,” Aynes said. “We are starting to do that at a pretty good clip.”

Berryville led 21-0 at halftime and Weston scored another rushing touchdown in the second half.

Aynes knows there are still areas in which the Bobcats can improve.

“It’s the small things like learning who to block on whatever play we are running,” Aynes said. “Making sure we get and execute that block. On defense, making sure we are reading our keys and doing what we are supposed to.”

Defensively, Aynes said Kennon Helmlinger played well. Helmlinger had a few pass breakups and tackles for loss.
