GF struggles with trip to Oklahoma
The Green Forest Tigers forgot to show up to play in Friday evening's 32-0 loss at Commerce, Okla.
“We got over there and laid a big egg,” Green Forest coach Bobby Bishop said. “We got hit in the mouth and met up with a better team. We just weren’t very good. We had a breakdown in fundamentals, technique, not reading keys, not pursuing the football, mistakes on offense and crucial penalties at critical times. We got it handed to us.”
Commerce got out to an early 13-0 lead and took a 20-0 lead minutes into the second quarter. Bishop said it is concerning that his team played the way it did.
“It was one of those things where we had forgotten all of the drills we had ever done,” Bishop said. “The concept of teamwork. I don’t blame it on anything. Our kids got there and they weren’t ready to play. I guess part of that is my fault, but it was like we walked in there and we didn’t play nearly as hard or as smart as we did last week. One thing about it is, there is a lot of football yet to be played.”
Green Forest held Commerce scoreless in the third quarter before giving up two touchdowns in the final quarter. Bishop said the Tigers will be going back to the basics this week to get better.
“We will be doing blocking and tackling this week,” Bishop said. “Doing your assignment. Doing your job. I told the kids this morning in film that it’s hard to get a team to work if you don't have teamwork. We didn’t work together. We didn’t cover for each other. We didn’t do our jobs."
Bishop is ready to put the game against Commerce behind him.
“We are going to watch the film on that one more time Tuesday morning and put that to bed,” Bishop said. "We have JV action in Harrison, so there are going to be some kids who will get some valuable experience in our JV schedule over the next five weeks. Hopefully we can bring some of them along and fill in some of the spots where we are deficient and gain a little depth, too.”
Reiley Gordon passed for 43 yards against5 Commerce, while Jordan Zepeda rushed for 65 yards and Carter Boggs had 11 tackles.
On Friday, Green Forest will host West Fork. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
