Jr. Bobcats start 1-0
The Berryville junior high team started the year off on a positive note, getting a 27-6 win Thursday night at West Fork.
"We have improved dramatically since camp first started," Berryville coach Derrek Aynes said. "We have gotten a lot more stuff in offensively and defensively to where we can give people a lot more looks. Hopefully, that will lead us to some better plays."
The Bobcats received the opening kickoff and took advantage by scoring a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. After the teams exchanged punts, West Fork scored its lone touchdown of the game on a long run. Berryville answered on its next possession, as Isaac Weston found Kennon Helmlinger for a touchdown pass.
After Berryville forced the Tigers to punt, Weston found Helmlinger again for a 21-6 lead.
Brett Mingo had on a 50-yard touchdown run for Berryville and Caleb Record added a 20-yard TD run.
"I thought that Kennon had a good game, both offensively and defensively," Aynes said. "Brett Mingo ran the ball well and did good defensively. Caleb Record had a few good runs for us, too. Lineman-wise, Zach Boaz had a really good game. You always have to give credit to those guys. He had some really nice pancake blocks downfield that were fun to watch."
Despite the 21-point win, Aynes knows there is plenty of room for improvement.
"We are just going to get back to working on technique," Aynes said. "Blocking the right guy, making sure we are reading our keys on defense and being in the right spot. From there, we will continue to add stuff on offense and defense until we feel like we are at a good point."
On Thursday, Berryville will play at Huntsville. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
