Lady 'Cats start year with win
The Berryville Lady Bobcat volleyball team had its first match on Monday and came away with a 19-25, 25-15, 25-10 win at Hollister, Mo.
Coach Kristin Whetham said she was proud of her team for starting the year off with a win.
"It's always great to start the year with a win," Whetham said. "We know we have some things to work on, but that is what these first couple games are for."
Whetham said the Lady Bobcats didn't play very well in the first set, but after that she began to see the team play together as a unit.
"I expected us to come out a little rusty," Whetham said. "But overall, we stepped up and did our part. Taylor Swofford hit the ball really well. Serving-wise, not one person stood out. We were all pretty even. Jordan Estepp, she came in and played middle. She came up with some really good kills and had a few big blocks. She got a lot of big touches on balls that we needed her to get touches on."
Whetham was glad to see her entire team step up, as opposed to one individual player standing out from the rest.
"It's good seeing everybody do their job," Whetham said. "I rotated in a couple right sides for my setters in the front row so they could play good defense and hit the ball. They know their job. That is to play defense and when we catch the other teamís defense cheating we are going to give them a ball so that they can get a wide-open shot. This group of girls has really accepted their roles. They all stepped up last night and did what they were supposed to do."
On Thursday, the Lady Bobcats played Huntsville, a team that Whetham and the Lady Bobcats are very familiar with.
"Huntsville always has a good team," Whetham said. "They have a new coach. This will be their third coach in three years. We played them this summer. We beat them, but they are a very strong team and you never know what you are going to get with them. You know you are going to get hustle. You know they are going to serve well, play good defense and you are going to have to fight tooth and nail for every point."
