Golf season starting for BV
The Berryville golf team is coming off a year in which the boys and girls each made it to the Class 4A state tournament. McKayla Hussey finished fifth overall in the girls tournament, shooting an 84 at the Maumelle Country Club.
"We have had some of the kids playing in various tournaments throughout the summer, but practices for us kick off officially this week," Berryville coach Brent Compton said. "We are looking forward to kicking off the season."
Hussey returns to the girls team and Compton expects Hayley Rivett and Anna Caroline Stone to return as well. Those are the three girls who represented Berryville at last year’s state tournament. Compton hopes with the added experience that his team can improve on last year’s performance.
"It would be awesome to do even better this year," Compton said. "The state tournament is closer to home this year. It's going to be at Big Sugar in Pea Ridge. We feel like our team will be strong."
Ty Allen was an all-state golfer for the boys last year, but he graduated in May. Rusty Colbert and Jace Walker are returning, though. Compton expects to see others show up for the first practice.
"Those two will be asked to carry the load," Compton said. "I think they will get some help and we will have a good season."
Compton looks forward to getting on the course with his team.
"High school golf is about walking the entire time, so we have to get back in shape and get in the groove of hitting a lot of golf balls," Compton said. "Hopefully when it counts we will be hitting them straight."
