The Berryville Bobcats lost their first match of the season on Friday evening, losing 3-2 at Dardanelle.

"It was a very competitive match in a battle for the conference lead, where Dardanelle showed their strength in being back-to-back state champs," Berryville coach Dyllan Candelaria said. "They certainly played the part on Friday night."

Dardanelle scored the first goal of the match in the opening minutes of the first half, but the Bobcats answered midway through the half when Frederic Leroy scored a goal from midfield. The match was tied at 1-1 going into halftime.

"I was very happy with how hard we played," Candelaria said. "Effort was not the reason we lost. We just had a few too many mistakes that Dardanelle took advantage of."

The Sand Lizards came out and scored two quick goals to start the second half before Leroy scored a second goal on an assist from Brian Tovar. Berryville was unable to score a third goal.

"Dardanelle just took control in the second half like they have done all year," Candelaria said. "They scored two quick goals to get the 3-1 lead, but we responded with the goal from Frederic and that gave us a chance at the end. I was proud of our response. We got down two goals and most teams would have let Dardanelle keep rolling over them, but we got tough and got back in the game. It was a tough, hard-fought match that will be a great learning experience as we wind down the season and get ready for state tournament play."

Dardanelle 5, Berryville 3

The Berryville Lady Bobcats suffered a two-goal loss at Dardanelle on Friday, but coach Aaron Hall said he hopes the loss can be a positive.

"It's one of those weird things where the team that lost has the best chance of making it to the state finals," Hall said. "CAC is really good. They are going to win their district tournament and whoever is the No. 1 seed from our side will meet up with them in the semifinals. You have a pretty easy road to get to the semifinals, but once you get there, you are staring at them and they are pretty good."

Berryville's Maryn Jones scored the opening goal of the match, but the Lady Sand Lizards responded to tie the match at 1-1. Abby Thurman scored another goal for Berryville to take a 2-1 lead, but Dardanelle answered again to tie the match at 2-2. The Lady Sand Lizards went on to take a 3-2 lead into halftime.

"We got a really unlucky goal just before half," Hall said. "They had the ball and Vicki (Villatoro) went to clear it. She sent it past midfield and it hit the defender, which isn't that big of a deal most of the time. It bounced back straight toward their goal and hits their best player in stride, though. She is open to where it's just her and Amber. She puts it in right before half and puts us down 3-2."

Dardanelle scored on a corner kick five minutes into the second half, taking a 4-2 lead. Jones closed the lead to 4-3 midway through the second half. A shot by Lauren Compton which would have tied the match at 4-4, hit the post. Dardanelle added a goal late to seal the victory.

"Quite honestly, it was two pretty good teams going at it and they got the best of us," Hall said. "We were a little unlucky, but it is what it is."

On Monday, Berryville played at Gentry and Hall said it was important his team bounce back from Friday's loss.

"Tonight is extremely important oddly enough," Hall said. "Right now, Gentry only has one conference loss and we have two. Now they play three teams this week that are really good, so they could lose three this week. But in theory, if we get beat by them, we could be the No. 4 seed."

On Tuesday, Berryville will host Eureka Springs. The match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
