GF plays well on senior night

It was senior night for the Green Forest soccer team and things were a success for the Tigers, as they defeated the Gentry Pioneers, 9-0.

"It was a great way to send the seniors out for their home career," Green Forest coach Jonathan Bryant said. "I'm not a big fan of putting large numbers up against teams, but it's hard to tell a senior not to go out and shoot in their last home game."

Senior Edson Merida scored five goals in Friday night's victory.

"We give Edson a hard time because he probably has the most shots taken of our entire team put together," Bryant said. "I told him that I don't care if you shoot when you are wide-open, the only time I mind is when you are covered with two or three people on you and we have somebody else wide-open. Friday night, he was on. He went 5 of 6 on shots on goal."

Bryant hopes the nine-goal victory, along with two other victories last week, will be a confidence booster for his team as the Class 4A state tournament approaches next week.

"We needed some games to boost us again," Bryant said. "Berryville isn't a bad team and neither is Dardanelle. Berryville traveled down there and Dardanelle beat them 3-2."

To go along with Merida's five goals, Jose Hernandez had two, while Bryant Escobar and Randi Alvarado each had one. Franklin Morales, Escobar and Hernandez each had two assists. Urbano Reyes had 15 steals, while Escobar had 12 and Elber Lopez had nine.

On Monday, the Tigers played at Danville.

"It's a big game for us because it's basically a battle for third or fourth place," Bryant said. "If we win, we are the No. 3 seed. If we lose, we are the No. 4 seed. We have to go down there and take care of business. You never know what can happen in this conference. It depends on who is on at what point in time."
