GF plays Harrison to a 1-1 draw
The Green Forest soccer team took on Harrison on Thursday in Green Forest and played the Goblins to a 1-1 draw.
"Harrison scored early against us," Green Forest coach Jonathan Bryant said. "It was kind of our own doing. Our left back went to clear the ball and as soon as he did, the ball went off of one of our midfielders’ backs and in the middle of the field right in front of the goal. As soon as that happened, one of their guys kicked it right in the back of the net."
The Tigers battled to score for the rest of the match and finally broke through in the second half.
"We had a corner and Jose Hernandez sent it in," Bryant said. "It rattled around on the ground. Edson Merida found it and connected with the back of the net. We had a couple of times after that where we could have taken the lead, but they had a lot of times to take the lead and they just sailed it. It wasn't like we had amazing saves, they just sailed the shots."
Elber Lopez had seven saves, while Bryant Escobar had 11 steals and Fredy Ortiz had seven.
Bryant knows he lost a lot from last year's team, but he expects to see improvements as the season continues.
"This team is different than my other teams," Bryant said. "These guys have come a long way in a short amount of time. When we gave up that first goal to Harrison, it could have snowballed into three or four goals. This team has some resilience to it. I'm hoping we can start meshing because if we can do that, we are going to be pretty good. It's a mentality thing with these guys. They have to get their mind right."
Green Forest will play in the Harrison tournament this weekend. The Tigers will take on the likes of Rogers, Siloam Springs and Harrison for a second time.
"Im not expecting us to go out there and win the entire tournament, but I am looking for us to go out there and be competitive," Bryant said.
