Bobcat wrestlers prepare for state
The Berryville Bobcats are heading to the state wrestling tournament on Friday and coach Derrek Aynes is excited to see how things will go.
"We are having the seeding meeting on Tuesday and we have several guys that should be in the top three or four of a couple divisions, but we will just see how it shakes out," Aynes said.
The Bobcats have taken two weeks off leading up to the state meet and Aynes said the team has taken this time to work on the basics.
"We have been going over low singles and how to do those correctly," Aynes said. "Double leg. Make sure we are doing those right. Make sure we are working ground game on escape. How to get breakdowns and how to pin them."
Aynes said rest will be key as the state tournament approaches.
"We need to be physically rested and ready to go," Aynes said. "We have had several guys that have been sick, so hopefully they get healthy again and are able to perform at their peak level."
Berryville will not be filling four of 13 weight classes at the state tournament, making it difficult to compete for the team championship. Aynes expects multiple wrestlers to compete for individual championships, though.
"We will have several guys in contention to win it," Aynes said. "If we can get several guys to place that would be great. That's what we are looking to do."
The state wrestling tournament starts at 10 a.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
