Tommy Altstatt spent more than 20 years working in law enforcement in Madison and Carroll counties. Altstatt died on Jan. 15 at the age of 60, but he won’t be forgotten by those who knew and worked with him.

On Monday, Carroll County Sheriff Randy Mayfield unveiled a shadow box at the sheriff’s office honoring Altstatt.

Mayfield, who said he knew Altstatt for more than 25 years, said the sheriff’s office wanted to honor him “for the man he is.”

The shadow box includes a photo of Altstatt as well as his badge and an American flag.

Altstatt’s mother, Viola, and his sons Rusty and Anthony were on hand for the unveiling and thanked Mayfield for honoring Altstatt.

“He was just a nice guy,” Mayfield said. “He had high moral character and never was ill-mannered toward anyone. He was a colleague but also a good friend.”
