Bobcats get off to strong start
The season could not have started out much better for the Berryville basketball team on Thursday, as the Bobcats cruised to a 75-52 home victory over Gentry. Zack Webb, Jarrett Ray, Scotland Lucas and Aaron Cisco all scored in double figures for the Bobcats.
"I'm very proud of the kids' effort and I thought they played very hard last night," Berryville coach Brent Compton said.
The Bobcats led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, but extended that lead to 34-24 going into halftime. Ray and Ty Allen each had seven points in the first half and Lucas added five.
"This is a year where if our guys will share the ball and look to make the extra pass, then offensively, we could be pretty dynamic," Compton said. "Honestly, we didn't shoot the ball really well last night. I know we scored 75 points, but offensively, we didn't play as well as we can."
The Bobcats added 24 points in the third quarter, as Ray scored seven points while Lucas and Webb scored six each. Berryville led 58-36 going into the fourth quarter.
Compton was happy to see the Bobcats get a convincing win in the first game of the year against a team they could see later in the season.
"It's very important to start your year off with a win and get some confidence," Compton said. "That gets your kids excited and motivated. And when you play a district opponent, you would like to make a statement and win that game because if you do play later on, hopefully they will dread that day if it comes."
Ray led the Bobcats in scoring with 14 points, while Lucas had 11. Webb and Cisco each had 10.
On Tuesday, Berryville travels to Lincoln. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
