A.J. Smith was born July 10, 1932 in Berryville, Ark. the ninth child of James Onus and Jennie (Allen) Smith. He departed this life Monday, Nov. 6, 2017 in Lake Elizabeth, Calif. at the age of 85.
A.J. attended the Hoodie school house outside of Berryville walking up hill both ways. As a young man he moved to California to work with his brother Leo hauling hay. A.J. returned to Arkansas in the mid-1970s. He retired from the Berryville School District and later from the Green Forest School District where he was a school bus driver and custodian. A.J. surrendered his life to the Lord many years ago and was a member of the Antioch Church in Berryville.
A.J. loved to coach little league baseball for his sons and loved to play golf as often as he could. If there was an auction anywhere around you could turn around and see A.J. there. He also frequented the Senior Center in Berryville playing dominos and pool. If he was still with us he would be out picking up walnuts today.
He is survived by his children, son, Terry Smith and wife Linda of San Diego, Calif.; son, Danny Smith and wife Tammy, Lake Elizabeth, Calif.; daughter, Phyllis Brady and husband Patrick of Berryville; daughter, Linda Brooks of Lancaster, Calif.; sister, Pauline Williams of Berryville; sister, Wanda Lawrence; six grandchildren: Kristi Hazard, Konica McNeal, Jami Emigh, Tamara Strickland, Jeramy Smith, Eric Smith; 12 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
A.J. is preceded in death by his parents, James Onus Smith and Jennie Smith; six brothers, Olin Smith, Everett Smith, Leo Smith, Willard Smith, Paul Smith, Hoover Smith; sister, Myrtle Summers and granddaughter, April Duarte.
Services will be held at the Antioch Church on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017 at 10 a.m. with Pastor Brandon Lyle and Rex Wisdom officiating. Interment will follow at the Black Jack Cemetery.
