GF ABC Preschool opens 20 new student slots

The Arkansas Better Chance (ABC) Preschool Program at Green Forest Elementary School has expanded its services, adding 20 new student slots.

The Green Forest School Board voted at its meeting on Monday, Sept. 18, to approve the addition of 20 slots in the 2017-18 ABC Preschool Program. The board had previously approved 20 slots at its March meeting, making for a combined total of 40 slots. Superintendent Matt Summers said 30 of the slots will be funded through the federal program without charge, and the other 10 will be offered on a tuition basis.

Amy Rochow, lead teacher in the ABC Preschool Program at Green Forest, said the program was expanded because of the need for affordable childcare.

“We believe there is a need for programs like this,” she said. “We’ve had a waiting list every year. As far as we understand, the other preschools in the area have, too.”

She said the Green Forest School District wanted to add another classroom to the ABC Preschool Program so that it could serve more children and prepare them for kindergarten.

“We already have a classroom right now with 20 kids in it,” Rochow said. “The new classroom opening up will have 20 more. Of those slots, 10 are free to families who qualify based on income, and there will be 10 tuition spots available also for families who don’t qualify.”

She said the ABC Preschool Program offers a variety of daily activities for the children involved, including morning circle time, breakfast, reading books and singing songs, learning centers for children to play in, small groups for children to work on individual skills, lunch, nap time and math circles.

Rochow said she thinks expanding the ABC Preschool Program will be good for the community because it will provide parents with more childcare options.

“Maybe they won’t have to stay on a waiting list for a whole year before being able to get their kids in,” she said. “I think it will open up a lot of opportunities.”

Rochow said that applications are already being accepted for the new preschool slots. Parents can pick up an application at the front office of Green Forest Elementary School, she said, and turn them back in at the same location. The slots will be filled on a first come first served basis, she said.

If parents have any questions, Rochow said they can call the ABC Preschool Program at 870-438-6130 or call Green Forest Elementary.
