Early voting starts Tuesday

Friday, September 8, 2017

Early voting for the 2017 annual school election will begin Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Early voting will be held at the Eastern District Courthouse at 210 W. Church in Berryville and the Western District Courthouse at 44 Main St. in Eureka Springs. Office hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and the last day to early vote will be Monday, Sept. 18.

The annual school election will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19. The polls will open at 7:30 a.m. and will close at 7:30 p.m. at Berryville United Methodist Church at 400 Eureka Ave. in Berryville.

The Eureka Springs School District and the Green Forest School District will not open polls on Sept. 19 because of unopposed races for all candidates appearing on the ballot as well as no proposed increase in millage rates.

The Berryville School District has one contested race between incumbent Kristi Howerton and Wendell Dunbar for a five-year term in At Large Position 2. Incumbent LeAnn Ashford is running unopposed for a five-year term in Zone 3.

The district is also asking voters to approve a 4.45-mill increase to fund the construction of a new high school and other construction. A mill is equal to one-tenth of 1 percent and the millage tax is paid on the assessed value of a particular piece of property. In Arkansas, the assessed value of a piece of property is 20 percent of its appraised value. Thus, a 4.45-mill tax on a property with an appraised value of $100,000 would equal $89 per year.

For the Eureka Springs school board, incumbent Chris McClung is running unopposed for a three-year term in Position 1, and incumbent Albert J. Larson is running unopposed a for a three-year term for Position 2.

In Green Forest, incumbent John L. Bailey is running unopposed for a five-year term in Zone 4.

All voting in the Eureka Springs and Green Forest districts will be conducted by absentee and early voting per resolutions passed by the respective school boards and filed with the Carroll County Clerk’s Office.

The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot by mail is Tuesday, Sept. 12. All ADA-compliant accessible early voting will be conducted at the Eastern District Courthouse in Berryville.
