GF JV loses close one to Eagles
The Huntsville Eagles defeated the Green Forest junior high team 22-20, on Thursday night at Huntsville, but coach Ryan Whetham is extremely proud of the effort his team showed.
"It was probably one of the top three junior high football games that I have been associated with since I have been here," Whetham said. "It was such a fun game to coach and the kids fought with everything they had."
Green Forest fumbled the opening kickoff inside its 20-yard line and Huntsville took advantage, taking a 7-0 lead. The Tigers answered with a drive of their own, tying the game at 7-7 and the game was tied at 14-14 going into halftime. Midway through the fourth quarter, Huntsville scored to take a 20-14 lead and a two-point conversion gave the Eagles a 22-14 lead. Green Forest scored with 1:30 left in the game and attempted a two-point conversion as well.
"We called the same play that we scored the touchdown play on, just to the other side," Whetham said. "Paul Barrett probably missed it by two inches. We went back and watched it and he didn't get in, but those kids fought so hard. The defense played so good."
Reiley Gordon completed six of eight passes, including one for a touchdown. Bryan Soto caught the pass. Gordon also ran for a touchdown. Barrett Phillips scored the other touchdown for Green Forest.
Whetham said he was proud of the way Lilo Castillo blocked as a fullback.
Defensively, Gordon and Soto each had interceptions.
Whetham is excited as the season continues to move forward.
"They come to practice every day with a good attitude," Whetham said. "They want to practice. Everybody kind of dreads practice. Even as coaches, we sometimes dread practice, but they look forward to it. When they look forward to it, they make me want to come to practice."
