Bobcats name Aynes new wresting coach

In April, Doug Shott was hired to be the new Berryville football coach. Former head football coach Austin Winters elected to become the head wrestling coach after Matt Ferguson left to take a job in Springdale. At the July 24 school board meeting, Winters turned in his resignation and he will also be taking a job in Springdale. Defensive coordinator Derrek Aynes will help fill the void as the Bobcats’ new wrestling coach.

"I am very excited about it," Aynes said. "I know that Berryville has had a pretty good program over the last few years. I'm really excited to get to work with them and get our endurance a little better to where we have a chance to win championships. I know we have had several guys in their weight classes do it on their own, but I'm looking to get the team where we are competing for a state championship year in and year out."

Aynes doesn't have any previous wrestling experience, but he looks forward to learning about the sport as the season nears.

"I know Seth Record will be volunteering for us and I have heard nothing but great things about him," Aynes said. "I know he will be there to help us out."

Aynes knows it won't be an easy adjustment period, as he will have to jump right into wrestling after football season ends.

"I'm trying to finish up scheduling right now and get the administration side of it done," Aynes said. "Getting in enough meets for us, sending in bus requests because I'm about to be hot and heavy into football."

While Aynes has never been a wrestling coach, he is excited to coach a sport he has never coached.

"I'm looking forward to learning the ins and outs of wrestling," Aynes said. "And then just getting to see new things."

The school board also accepted the resignation and retirements of Robby Fairchild, Tammy Hood and Evangelina Perez. Candace Carpenter, William Frost and Jennifer Hoskins were all hired. Berryville's next scheduled board meeting will be on Tuesday, Aug. 28.
