BATESVILLE — You don’t see too many 9-1 victories in the state soccer tournament. But the Berryville Lady Bobcats got one Thursday, defeating E-Stem in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament in Batesville.

"I thought we played pretty good all game long," Berryville coach Aaron Hall said. "They got one. They called a foul on us and she made a great kick. After that, it was all us."

Maryn Jones had a hat trick for Berryville in the first half, scoring three goals before the break as the Lady Bobcats raced to a 5-1 halftime lead.

Natalia Hernandez scored a goal in each half and McKayla Hussey, Leslie Tellez, Vicky Villatoro and Yamelyn Barrios also scored for Berryville.

Hernandez scored first for the Lady Bobcats 13 minutes into the game, but the E-Stem free kick tied things at 1-1. After that, Jones scored consecutive goals to give the Lady Bobcats a 3-1 lead. Hussey scored to make it 4-1 and Jones’ third goal of the half extended Berryville’s lead to 5-1.

Tellez, Villatoro, Barrios and Hernandez all scored in the second half.

When Berryville’s lead reached six goals at 7-1, the remaining time was cut in half on the sportsmanship rule. Hall said it was nice to get some of his substitute players in the match and get extra rest for Friday’s second-round match against Batesville Southside.

"That's part of winning your conference," Hall said. "When you win your conference, you get rewarded with getting to play a team that's probably not as good as you. And the kids played well so that's the perks of doing your job throughout the season."

Friday’s second-round match was scheduled to begin at noon.
