Thurman named Funeral Director of the Year

Bobby Thurman of Nelson Funeral Home in Berryville was named the Arkansas Funeral Directors Associationís Funeral Director of the Year at the associationís annual convention March 31 and April 1 in Rogers.

Thurman, the great-grandson of Nelson Funeral Home founder Rea L. Nelson, joined the family business in May 1997 as the fourth generation. He is also a licensed funeral director in

Missouri and has been a deputy coroner since January 1998. On Dec. 1, 2005, he bought the business from his uncle, Douglas B. Nelson.

In 2010, Thurman became a member of the Advisory Board for Mortuary Science at Arkansas State University in Mountain Home. He has served in all the chairs of the Northwest Arkansas Funeral Directors Association, the Arkansas Funeral Directors Association and in July 2011, he was appointed by Gov. Mike Beebe to the State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors. In June 2012, he was nominated to the position of vice chairman of the state board.

Locally, Thurman is in Kiwanis, a board member of the Carroll County Historical & Genealogical Society, Eureka Springs Historical Museum, the Mercy Hospital-Berryville Foundation Board, a recruiter for the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks and a member of the Berryville Lodge No. 82 Independent Order of Odd Fellows in which he is the Past Grand Master for the state.

Thurman and his wife, Christy, have two daughters, Olivia and Ava. In his spare time, he plays the drums, and he likes to be outdoors camping, hunting, fishing and skiing.
