BV wins regular-season finale
GREEN FOREST — Going into the fourth quarter it appeared as if the Berryville Bobcats were going to cruise to an easy road victory on Friday night against the Green Forest Tigers. Green Forest scored 12 consecutive points to open the fourth quarter, making things much more interesting, but Berryville went on to get the win, 59-48.
"I thought our kids played really well, especially in the first half," Berryville coach Brent Compton said. "In the third quarter we played OK. And then, things didn't go as well in the fourth quarter. Our kids could have panicked, but they held it together and they finished it off."
Berryville led 49-30 going into the fourth quarter, but Green Forest's Luis Lopez scored two baskets to open the quarter. David Nelson added four points to cut the Bobcat lead to 49-42. Four points from Brady Smith and two free throws from Ty Allen helped extend the Bobcat lead to 56-44 and put the game out of reach.
Compton is proud of his team for being able to regain its composure after the tough start to the fourth quarter.
"It tells you what kind of character these guys have," Compton said. "They are super kids. They are mentally tough. They do things the right way. When you practice hard and when you are tough mentally and physically, you will overcome those kinds of obstacles when things don't go your way in the fourth quarter."
A three-pointer from Ty Allen and two baskets from Kelby Howerton to end the first quarter gave the Bobcats a 14-4 lead. Smith added nine points in the second quarter and Allen had five. Berryville led 36-18 at halftime.
Compton said the fourth-quarter troubles won't define his team moving forward.
"I'm not concerned about what happened in the fourth quarter," Compton said. "I think there was a lot of factors that went into that and how it went down."
Smith and Allen each finished the game with 17 points for Berryville and Luke Sugg had 11. Nelson led the Tigers with 18 points, while Cory Bryant had 15 and Rhett Powell had 11.
On Tuesday, Green Forest will travel to Mountain View for the district tournament and play Marshall. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
