Owen Powell is having a good first year as superintendent of Berryville schools.

The Berryville School Board voted at its Monday meeting to extend Powell's contract by a year and approved a 3 percent pay raise for him.

Powell said he appreciates that the board wants him to continue serving the district.

"I very much appreciate them extending my contract," he said. "I feel like we have a good school board. They're there for the right reason. They want to do whatever they can to help our students, our staff and our schools."

Powell continued, "It's nice to know that they like the work I've been doing and that I have their support."

Also at the meeting, the board accepted the resignation of Kim Phillips from her position as intermediate school secretary effective Dec. 30. The board then voted to approve the hiring of Ariel Tittsworth as intermediate school secretary for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year.

The school board's next regular meeting was rescheduled to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the Intermediate School Cafetorium because there will be no school on Monday, Feb. 20.
