Bobcat wrestlers place in Fayetteville
On Saturday, the Berryville wrestling team traveled to the Fayetteville wrestling tournament. Robert Allen won his weight class at 195 pounds, Christian Lemus finished second in his weight class at 170, as did Brett Parsons at 138. Colton Record finished third at 220 pounds.
"Our boys wrestled tough," Berryville coach Matt Ferguson said. "There was a lot of 6 and 7A teams there. We did get to see some 5A teams. We got to see Greenbrier, one of our big rivals in our classification. It was nice to see them. We were able to wrestle tough with those guys. It was a pretty good day."
Ferguson said the Bobcats didn't do as well as they had hoped from a team aspect.
"We were scratching four different weight classes," Ferguson said. "It makes it difficult to score points when you are scratching that many wrestlers."
Coming off Christmas break, Ferguson admits the team is a little bit behind, but in a way he is OK with that.
"Our guys are starting to get there, but I don't necessarily want them to start peaking just yet anyway," Ferguson said. "I want them to peak about three weeks from now leading up to state. I feel like we are doing pretty good and we have two or three guys that have a shot at being state champions this year. And I'm pretty excited about that."
Midway through the season, Ferguson has been impressed with how much fight some of the wrestlers have shown.
"None of these guys give up," Ferguson said. "They fight until the last second and that's what I always preach to them. It's nice to see that. We have had some kids who aren't necessarily great wrestlers, but they have wrestled all the way until the third period and then in the third period something happens and they get in a good situation and end up pinning the kid."
On Saturday, the Bobcats travel to the Pulaski Academy Tournament in Little Rock. The match starts at 9 a.m.
